Bile is a secretion of liver cells, and plays an important role in digestion and absorption of fats. Liver daily produces about 1 liter of bile, but it is concentrated - the gall bladder has a capacity of only about 50 ml. Gallbladder is emptied periodically, in conjunction with food intake and fatty food entering the duodenum.

Bile salts emulsifies ie disperse the fat from food into smaller particles, which then become available to the enzymes for degradation (lipase), and also help in transferring probavljenih final products of fat to the intestinal mucous membrane. In addition, through the bile is secreted by a number of important waste product levels: bilirubin (final degradation product of hemoglobin) and cholesterol (excess synthesized in the liver).

Bile contains a number of ingredients: water, bile salts, bilirubin, cholesterol, fatty acids, lecithin, sodium ions, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate, but the only functional component of bile salts that are essential for the digestion of fat.

Gallstones are the most common biliary tract disease, in which a clearly visible role of diet. It is not yet clear why some people kidney stones can cause health problems, while others largely dormant with no symptoms.
